President’s Message
There will be an Olde Mill Swim Club meeting
on Wednesday, September 1 at 6:00 p.m. The VOMCA general memebership meeting
will follow at 7:00 p.m.
Both meetings will be held outdoors at the Olde Mill Swim Club at Barlowe Field.
Thanks to VOMCA vice president Rick
Behringer for taking part in the community ride-along with the Anne Arundel
County Police. Eastern District police allowed community leaders to ride in
patrol cars with their officers. Rick was able to travel with the patrol that
includes the Olde Mill area. This information was also included in the Maryland Gazette and the Evening Capital newspapers. Rick spent
an eight-hour shift with the officer he was assigned to. He was able to see
what goes on in the Olde Mill/Glen Burnie area, and the types of calls our county
police department handles.
As the summer comes to an end, I would like
to thank all the volunteers who assisted in our community over the summer. I also
extend an extra thank-you to the volunteers at the Olde Mill Swim Club this
year. Without your support, we could not have had another successful season
such as we did. If anyone has suggestions or concerns about how we may improve things
at the Olde Mill Swim Club, please call the pool hotline at 410-987-7890 or
email me directly at tastag@verizon.net.
We need your input to provide you with the most relevant service as a swim
club.
With school days approaching, please drive
with care in the community, especially along Old Mill Road. We have students walking to school and
buses that travel—and stop frequently—along that main artery leading to the
education complex.
County officials will meet with us in
October to go over the traffic issues along Old Mill Road. They want to receive input from community
association members and residents who
live on Old
Mill Road. Notification will be made in the Crier when a date and time have been
confirmed. This may not necessarily coincide with a Wednesday night VOMCA
meeting.
One
final note of caution: There have been robberies and assaults reported in the
Olde Mill area. Please watch out for each other and be aware of your
surroundings as you walk or drive in the area. Make sure your vehicles are
locked and no valuables are left in plain sight in your car Always call 911 if
you see anything that seems out of place.
Hope to see some new faces at the September
1 VOMCA meeting at 7:00 p.m.
―Tom Stag, President
First Olde Mill Bird Walk Held
Olde Mill’s first-ever community bird walk
was conducted on August 8. We saw 16 species of birds, and were very lucky to
observe a Cooper’s Hawk being harassed, and also harassing American Crows.
While only two Olde Mill residents attended this walk, they happily left with
more information about birds than when they started. The species we saw and/or
heard were: American Robin, Goldfinch, House Finch, House Sparrow, Carolina
Chickadee, American Crow, Cooper’s Hawk, Blue Jay, Grackle, Mourning Dove,
Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, White breasted Nuthatch, Carolina Wren, Northern
Cardinal, and an unidentified gull.
Our county is home to a local bird club (with
the imaginative name of Anne Arundel Bird Club). They meet the first Friday of
every month from October through May (except March) at 8:00 p.m. at Arlington Echo. They also schedule field trips a
couple of times a month. This is a friendly group that eagerly shares its bird-identification
skills with newcomers. Check out their web page:
http://www.danhaas.com/AABIRDCLUB/. There is no fee to attend meetings or go on
field trips, but you are encouraged to become a member if you enjoy these
events.

Another Olde Mill Bird Walk Scheduled―for Families!
On Sunday,
September 12, at 8:00 a.m., meet at
the Olde Mill Pool parking lot off Chalet Drive for a family bird walk. Plan for about an hour or so.
All ages are welcome. Bring binoculars if you have them. We will look and
listen for signs of birds, and other living creatures, as we walk through our
neighborhood. If you would like more information, please contact Stacy Epperson
at 410-987-7533 or tryswim@comcast.net. You do not need to register, just show up!

to volunteer to run for and serve your community. Elections are in October and
November―October is for the officers and November is for the Board positions. An
active and aware community association is essential to ahealthy, progressive

involvement.

NCEON
Needs Food for the Needy
North County
Emergency Outreach Network (NCEON) is the organization to which we donate at
Christmas time with the food collection through our Santa visit. It is in dire need
of summertime donations of various canned and nonperishable food items. The
economy has greatly impacted their resources this summer; demand for help from
them is high. Supplies of canned vegetables, fruit, soups, dry goods such as
flour and sugar, items like cereal, peanut butter, jelly, etc., and household
supplies like paper towels or tissues are needed to help them now and in coming
months.
You can help out
by delivering your donated items to NCEON at 304 5th Ave., Glen Burnie. It is
open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; call for
information at 410-766-1826.

Our community newsletter, The
Village Crier, is published online. You will be signed up automatically,
via the email address you provide,
unless you indicate that you do not wish to receive the publication. You can
also read it by going to the VOMCA website at www.vomca.org.
VOMCA has made it possible to secure
grants from the State and County for projects like the repair of sidewalks,
repaving our pool road, installing speed humps, and other community improvements.
If we did not have an association and volunteers, we could not secure many of
these benefits or services.
- We sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt, Santa
Visit, Community Carnival, and Community Yard Sale. With more members and
volunteers, we could do even more.
- We’ve been keeping up with what’s
happening concerning the new development on the Wade property at Old Mill
and Oakwood Roads. Learn more, come to a meeting.
- We work with local government
concerning issues that affect our community.
- Elections are held in October for
members of the Board of Directors. In order to vote, or to run, membership
dues must be mailed and postmarked by September 1.
Occasional one-time
projects at the pool and Barlowe Field come up. If you can volunteer please
email board@vomca.org or call 410-987-0316.
