VOMCA Meeting
   July meeting is cancelled
   Next meeting August 4
Village of Olde Mill Crier

Volume 40,  Number  7  / JULY 2010

President’s Message

I would like to invite individuals to join the Old Mill Road traffic committee. If you are interested please contact us at board@vomca.org. This study for now covers only Old Mill Road. The county will get in touch with us in September or October of this year. I want to stress that this study is only for Old Mill Road at this time, according to the county.
With summer and the warm weather here we want everyone to enjoy the community, Barlowe Field, and the Olde Mill Swim Club. Parents, please make sure your children respect others while on VOMCA property. The park/field/ swim club are private property and everyone should respect others that frequent the area with children. We have had some problems with people loitering on the parking lot and basketball court. We have signs posted that the park area is closed from dusk till dawn. VOMCA may place private property and no loitering signs up so that the police can enforce the law when they encounter groups that have been loitering down there. This has become an issue that I have received numerous complaints about. If this continues we can serve an order on parents of minors and on adults, restricting them from being on our property.
The Olde Mill Swim Club is now open seven days a week. The hours are from
12:00 noon until 8:00 p.m. Please call the membership hotline or stop by the pool to get information and the membership application.
Note that our July VOMCA meeting has been cancelled.

―Tom Stag, President of VOMCA

Police Alert County Residents About Thefts From Cars

Several communities located in the Crofton area are experiencing a higher than normal volume of thefts from parked automobiles. While the Anne Arundel County Police Department is doing everything possible to effect arrests in these cases, all residents are asked to report any suspicious activity and/or persons in the community. If possible, please provide a detailed description of any persons or vehicles that are observed concerning any illegal acts or involved in suspicious activity.
In many of the theft-from-auto cases vehicles are left unlocked or windows have been left open. GPS units along with other valuable property left in plain view are being stolen. Please remember to lock your vehicle doors and windows. Also, never leave valuables in sight when your vehicle is unoccupied.

If you observe or hear any of the following, please contact the police immediately:
- Subjects not known to the neighborhood loitering in the street
- Subjects peering into vehicle windows
- Subjects checking door handles of parked cars
Please write down serial numbers of all property and store the list of numbers in a secure place. Engrave your name and an identifying number (driver’s license number, etc.) on all property. Write your name or an identifying number on all music CDs, DVD movies, GPS, satellite radios, etc. with a permanent type marker

If you have any questions or concerns in regards to the above information, or would like to provide information, please contact me at 410-222-6155. Thank you. Your assistance and cooperation in fighting crime is greatly appreciated.

Sen. DeGrange Comments on Civil Confinement Law

June 22, 2010
TO: THE CITIZENS OF LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT 32
SUPREME COURT RULES FEDERAL CIVIL CONFINEMENT CONSTITUTIONAL

For the past five years, I have advocated for legislation that would add
Maryland to the states that have adopted civil confinement laws for sexually violent predators. The concept of civil confinement requires individuals who are convicted of a sexually violent offense to be confined to a state mental facility, after they serve their prison sentence and until it is determined that they are no longer likely to engage in a similar act. When I first introduced legislation pertaining to civil confinement in Maryland, fourteen states had similar laws. Today, nineteen states have civil confinement laws, including neighboring Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Additionally, the United States Supreme Court has ruled that state civil confinement laws are constitutional.
Recently, the issue of federal civil confinement was before the Supreme Court. The federal law, at issue, allows the federal government to continue to detain prisoners who had engaged in sexually violent conduct, suffered from mental illness, and would have difficulty controlling themselves until they are no longer dangerous. On May 17th, in a 7-2 decision, the United States Supreme Court upheld the law and declared that Congress had the constitutional power to authorize holding sex offenders after they had served their prison terms.
Unfortunately, it has been proven that despite attempts to increase prison sentences for sexually violent predators, sentencing them to lifetime supervision and even requiring them to register more frequently does not prevent sexually violent predators from re-offending. I strongly believe that a civil commitment law is the best way to ensure that our children are protected from predators.
Please do not hesitate to contact me about this or any other legislative issue of concern to you. As always, I encourage and welcome your input.

Sincerely,
State Sen. James "Ed" DeGrange, Sr., District 32

VOMCA has made it possible to secure grants from the State and County for projects like the repair of sidewalks, repaving our  pool road, installing speed humps, and other community improvements. If we did not have an association and volunteers, we could not secure many of these benefits or services.

  • We sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt, Santa Visit, Community Carnival, and Community Yard Sale. With more members and volunteers, we could do even more.
  • We’ve been keeping up with what’s happening concerning the new development on the Wade property at Old Mill and Oakwood Roads. Learn more, come to a meeting.
  • We work with local government concerning issues that affect our community.
  • Elections are held in October for members of the Board of Directors. In order to vote, or to run, membership dues must be mailed and postmarked by September 1.
