President’s Message
I would like to thank Sarah Hakulin for attending the hearing on the Snyder Homes project. I was out of town and Sarah stepped up and represented the Olde Mill community on this issue. We will continue to monitor this and pass all information on to VOMCA members and residents of Olde Mill.
We are looking into finding a land-use attorney to represent the community in the Snyder Homes development. We will need input from the general membership to see if it would be feasible for VOMCA to retain a lawyer.
I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped make the Olde Mill Swim Club a success again for another season. Thanks to Peter Kogut and Rachel Ballard for their hard work and dedication on managing the swim club this year. Peter and Rachel were able to do an outstanding job keeping the pool operational and safe with fewer personnel this year. I also would like to thank all the guards for their hard work and dedication.
There also has been a request by some members to update the OMSC rules for 2010. If anyone would like something changed or added, please email me your thoughts at tastag@verizon.net. Many of you know that we ran a special this past May to try to boost the swim club membership. On August 1 we had 31 new certificates sold and 230 active members. This equaled a fourteen-year high in new certificates that were purchased. I would like to thank the OMSC Committee and VOMCA for working together and making this a reality. As many of you know, community pools in the
U.S. are going under and unable to open. There have been some here in Anne Arundel County that did not open and had hard times. As soon as the books for the season are closed, I will send a copy of this year’s income/expense statement to the membership of OMSC and VOMCA. If you do not see this information or you want a personal copy sent, please email me.
For the upcoming Community Clean-Up Days, Sept. 2-4, the following items may not be dropped off at the dumpster that the county will place in the pool parking lot:

Junk Autos, Trailers, Gas and Propane Tanks, Tree Trunks, Oil Drums or Tanks, Liquids, Hazardous Waste, Boats, Tires, Logs, Paint, Refrigerators, Air Conditioners
Thanks to Rick Behringer, Tom Malloy, and Al Miller for volunteering to monitor the dumpster while it is here those three days. Just a reminder: Anything that the County doesn't take becomes our responsibility to get rid of, so please do not leave any of the aforementioned prohibited items at the lot. And if the dumpster is full, please don’t leave anything on the ground next to it. Thank you for your cooperation.
There are no minutes to report from the August VOMCA meeting; we once again lacked a quorum. Only 11 members are necessary to be present at the opening of the meeting, so your attendance is very impoortant to us, and much appreciated. Hope to see you at the September 2 VOMCA meeting at the pool.

―Tom Stag, President

Another Update on Wade Property Development
The county has ruled in favor of the developer of the Wade property, Snyder Homes, in its request for an exemption and a variance. A hearing to allow “a special exception for an Assisted Living Facility in a Residential District and a variance to allow an extension in time for the implementation of a special exception for an assisted living facility on property located at 8324 Elvaton Road, Millersville” was held on July 16 in Annapolis.
The hearing officer, Douglas Hollmann, subsequently rendered his decision in early August granting the “special exception to allow an assisted living facility in a residential district pursuant to § 18-11-104….” In addition, the variance for time to obtain a building permit was extended to
January 30, 2014.
The full text of the hearing officer’s decision can be found on our website, www.vomca.org.
Further information will be provided as the development proceeds. There will be future meetings with the County regarding this project, including some pertaining to traffic and roads. We will attempt to get them scheduled at a time when more people can attend. Our voice can still make a difference.

―Sarah Hakulin, VOMCA Representative to the Hearing

FOOM Fall Flea Market on Saturday, September 12
FOOM―Friends of Olde Mill―is sponsoring the Second Annual Flea Market at the Swim Club parking lot on Saturday, September 12, from 8 a.m. till 2 p.m. Various vendors and flea market tables will be present for your fall bargain shopping. FOOM will be selling items contributed by the community, with all proceeds going to benefit the playground. See attached flyer.

Join VOMCA to Be Eligible for Voting & Elections
Don’t forget to join your community association by September 1, so that you can have a voice in the election process for officers and members of the board. Membership applications must be postmarked no later than September 1. See application for 2009 below or on our website, www.vomca.org for PayPal. The membership cost is only $15 per household annually.
Consider volunteering a year of your time to serve your community. It is a great opportunity for anyone considering going into politics or public service. There are several vacant positions available but all officer positions are open for anyone to compete. Secretary, Membership, and two Board positions are vacant. Board members serve for 3-year terms. Contact board@vomca.org if you are interested.

Thank You for Service
I would like to thank our VOMCA Secretary Charlene Stammer Connery, who recently resigned her position with VOMCA because of increasing commitments at her work. Charlene has served for many years in various positions for our community. She served as Treasurer for Past President John Tilden, Board Member for Past President Sarah Hakulin, and Secretary for current President Tom Stag.
Charlene and her family established the first Easter Egg Event in March 2002, and she served as chairperson for several years. She and her family stuffed all the eggs and planted them on Barlowe Field that first year. Since that time, this event has grown and become a very popular rite of spring for our children. We shall miss her enthusiasm and good will, and wish her well in all her future endeavors. Thank you, Charlene.

―Sarah Hakulin

Community Clean-Up Days From Sept. 2 to 4
Anne Arundel County will provide dumpsters to our community on Wednesday, September 2, at 12 noon until 8 a.m. on Friday, September 4. Please take advantage of this yearly service to get rid of trash and debris around your home and community. The dumpster will be at Barlowe Field on the pool access road.
Unacceptable materials in the dumpsters include: Junk autos (no clunkers!), trailers, gas and propane tanks, tree trunks, oil drums or tanks, liquids, hazardous wastes, boats, tires, logs, paint, refrigerators, or air conditioners.
Nothing can protrude from the top of the dumpsters and anything not acceptable to the county and left at the pool lot is our responsibility to dispose of―which will cost VOMCA money and time.
   Please be considerate.

VOMCA has made it possible to secure grants from the State and County for projects like the repair of sidewalks, repavingour the pool road, installing speed humps, and other community improvements. If we did not have an association and volunteers, we could not secure many of these benefits or services.

  • We sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt, Santa Visit, Community Carnival, and Community Yard Sale. With more members and volunteers, we could do even more.
  • We’ve been keeping up with what’s happening concerning the new development on the Wade property at Old Mill and Oakwood Roads. Learn more, come to a meeting.
  • We work with local government concerning issues that affect our community.
  • Elections are held in October for members of the Board of Directors. In order to vote, or to run, membership dues must be mailed and postmarked by September 1.

Occasional one-time projects at the pool and Barlowe Field come up. If you can volunteer please email www.board@vomca.com or call 410-987-0316.
