President’s Message
August is the last full month of summer. School starts on August 24-25 and vacations are over. It is VOMCA’s hope that everyone enjoyed these magic days of summer.  Please drive carefully and watch for children walking to school and crossing streets in the coming weeks.
Thanks to the residents who were able to attend the hearing in Annapolis regarding the Wade property subdivision by Snyder Development, Inc. The developers presented their case for a “special exception” and a “variance” to build an assisted living facility in a residential area as well as a town center. They requested an additional 3 years to develop the plans for the town center and the assisted living facility. The hearing officer has 30 days to respond. Additional information such as site plans may be posted at www.vomca.org. See article below for more details on the meeting.
We were shy of a quorum for the July VOMCA meeting, but here is the current financial data for the association:
VOMCA savings account $3,062.38;  Checking $4,422.75.
Swim Club savings is $$16,604.08;   Checking $11,629.81
Friends of Olde Mill (FOOM) would like to remind everyone to bring their unwanted items on August  22 to the collection at the Swim Club parking lot. The community Flea Market is set for Saturday, September 12. Bring your items to the parking lot between 8 a.m. and 12 noon. The playground will benefit from sale of your unwanted items.

Community Clean-up Days are set for September 2-4 (just before Labor Day weekend) and sponsored by the county. The dumpster will be in the parking lot at Barlowe Field.  Let’s use this valuable benefit to clean up Olde Mill and raise the value of your property. Just remember that certain items are prohibited from being put in or near the dumpster—tires, hazardous materials and chemicals, large auto parts, to name a few.
The next VOMCA Meeting will be on Wednesday, August 5, at 7 p.m. at the pool, preceded by the Pool Meeting at 6 p.m. Remember, we need at least 11 members to conduct business for VOMCA. We were one member short last month. See you there.

Wade Property Hearing Held July 16
The county hearing for the Snyder Development Company requesting a variance and a special exception was held on Thursday, July 16, at the Arundel Center in Annapolis. The case was made for an extension of time to do the necessary work to develop the corner of Old Mill Blvd. and Oakwood Rd., so that an Assisted Living and Town Center could be constructed in a residential neighborhood. The variance request is for permission to build the Assisted Living facility and the Town Center .
Nine residents of Olde Mill attended the hearing. Four spoke voicing their concerns about the project. Traffic, duplication of businesses, wetlands, and buffers were some of the concerns. All comments will be weighed against the developer’s testimony, along with comments from a Planning & Zoning review of the proposed request. The decision of the Hearing Officer will be rendered within 30 days, granting or denying the request.
There will be future meetings in the county regarding this project, including some pertaining to traffic and roads. Such meetings will be important for Olde Mill residents to make a large showing. Comments made at a meeting will become part of the official record of the proceedings. Hopefully, these meetings will be held at a time when more people can attend, such as in the evening. Our voice can still make a difference.

Assault, Attempted Robbery on B&A Trail
On July 24, at approximately 9:20 p.m., two victims, a 56-year-old male and a 51-year-old female from Severna Park were walking on the B&A Bike Trail in the area of Cattail Passage and Whites Road in Severna Park when they were approached from behind by a male subject. The suspect demanded that they turn over any valuables. The victims told the suspect they didn’t have anything and the suspect subsequently struck the male victim in the face. The suspect then fled the area and ran south on the B&A Trail. The victims walked home and notified police. The victim sustained minor facial injuries in the incident, but he refused treatment by medical personnel.
Investigating officers then broadcast a lookout for the suspect. Numerous officers, a K-9 unit, and an aviation unit responded to the scene, where an extensive search was conducted, but the suspect was not located. Suspect was described as a black male in his teens, approximately 5’6”-5’7” with a slim build. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and a black baseball hat that was turned backwards.
If you have information on the above crime or suspect, please call, email, or text your tip to Metro Crime Stoppers Hotline, available 24 hours a day toll-free at 1-866-7LOCKUP or text “MCS plus your message” to CRIMES (274637). Phone calls are not recorded and callers remain anonymous. You may also be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.

VOMCA has made it possible to secure grants from the State and County for projects like the repair of sidewalks, repavingour the pool road, installing speed humps, and other community improvements. If we did not have an association and volunteers, we could not secure many of these benefits or services.

  • We sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt, Santa Visit, Community Carnival, and Community Yard Sale. With more members and volunteers, we could do even more.
  • We’ve been keeping up with what’s happening concerning the new development on the Wade property at Old Mill and Oakwood Roads. Learn more, come to a meeting.
  • We work with local government concerning issues that affect our community.
  • Elections are held in October for members of the Board of Directors. In order to vote, or to run, membership dues must be mailed and postmarked by September 1.

Occasional one-time projects at the pool and Barlowe Field come up. If you can volunteer please email www.board@vomca.com or call 410-987-0316.
The next VOMCA meeting will be at the Old Mill Swim Club on Wednesday, June 3 at 7 p.m.
