President’s Message
Note that the Olde Mill Pool will close
early on Thursday, July 2, to accommodate a swim meet scheduled that evening.
I have spoken to Brenda Reiber from the
County Executive’s Office in reference to VOMCA taking over the open space
behind some homes along Chalet Drive. She will be checking with the legal office
to see if we would be obligated to take over all the open space areas if we are requesting to take that
particular one. [When Olde Mill was built, the developer gave the open spaces
to the County to hold in trust.]
This stems from a neighbor dispute in the
area. Brenda informed me that the County gave the homeowners a plan and asked
the homeowner to submit to the County what type of trees or bushes they would
like to plant along that area. The County in turn would check with the law
office to see if the County could post signs on the property that would only
allow authorized vehicles there.
At the last VOMCA meeting we were told that
the County informed the homeowner that the County could sell this property to a
developer. This is not true. Again, as I stressed before, the County does not
own this property and neither the County nor anyone else may sell this open
space. The only way this open space may be transferred from the County’s trust is
to have the deed transferred over to a homeowners association.
At our last meeting the general membership voted
in favor of seeing about us taking over this open space. There are a few
factors that will determine if we will:
1) Only if we, VOMCA, are able to take just this one particular piece of
open space; and 2) if the County plan that was offered to the homeowner does
not satisfy taking care of the problem.
At the June meeting the general membership
was not aware that the County offered the homeowner an action plan to assist
them.
Regarding the proposed Snyder Homes
development on the Wade property at the corner of Old Mill Blvd. and Oakwood
Rd., there will be a public hearing on Thursday, July 16, at 9:30 a.m. at the
Arundel Center in Annapolis. The hearing will be in the County Council Chambers.
If anyone is for or against this project, this is the time for you to let it be
known to the County. I am hoping to have some more information on this subject
at the July 1 VOMCA meeting at the Olde Mill Swim Club. The meeting will start
at 7:00 p.m., following the OMSC Pool meeting that starts at 6:00.
We are still waiting to see how we did this
year on the carnival. We had rain some days and the crowd was not here this
year. As soon as we get the numbers from Shaw & Sons, I will pass them on
to you.
The Olde Mill Swim Club is open. I would
like to thank all the members for their support for the swim club. If you are
not a member, please think of joining. The OMSC offers swim team competition and
swimming lessons. Please contact the membership line at the pool.

June issue of the Crier. You can also

Mill. For more information call 410-987-1239.
Mosquito Spraying Has Begun
We have been notified by the Maryland Department
of Agriculture that mosquito spraying in Olde Mill began the week of June 1 and continues till
September. Please check the VOMCA website news section for the specific day
and times of spraying.
Residents who wish to have their property
excluded from spraying will need to submit an exemption form. You can request
this form and further information by going to the website: www.mda.state.md.us/plants-pests/mosquito_control/mosquito_control_policy.php
Please help by eliminating standing water
around your property that acts as breeding sites for mosquitoes. Questions,
call 410-987-1239.
See the detailed, helpful tips in the Md. Dept. of
Agriculture mosquito control newsletter available from the VOMCA website. (.pdf reader software necessary to read.)
Minutes of June
3, 2009, VOMCA General Meeting
Meeting was called to order at the pool by
President, Tom Stag. A quorum was present so business could be conducted. Sarah
Hakulin took the minutes in the absence of Secretary Charlene Connery.
Treasurer Sarah Hakulin reported that the
Savings account had $3,062.38 and the Checking account had $4,066.56. VOMCA Membership
is at 110. The bill for the $400 Pool Special ad is $573. Tom Stag reported
that we got a good response to the ad and 9 certificates had been sold. With the new certificates and the continuing
membership coming in, we are in good financial shape to maintain the swim club.
Rerunning the ad was still in discussion at the time of the June meeting.
VP Rick Behringer reported that soda and
snack vending machines were being investigated for possible use by the swim
club. Also donations were being sought to help defray the cost of entertainment
nights at the pool.
Volunteers are needed for the snack bar
during swim times. If you can help, contact the pool at 410-987-7890. Also,
swim lesson slots are available and swim team members are sought; call
410-987-7890.
Sidewalk repair began on June 9 through
another grant from the Community Enhancement program through the State Transportation
Dept. $27,765 was granted for repairs to
sidewalks throughout the community. Curbs and ramps were created on the pool
road to help with access to the basketball court and public sidewalks. Barlow
Construction Inc. received the bid.
June 10-13, Shaw Carnival comes to Olde
Mill. Proceeds from the carnival will help defray costs for the operation of
the community.
Two members of VOMCA addressed the meeting regarding a long-standing
issue with their neighbor regarding tractors in their front yard and destructive
use of the open space which is behind their house and voluntarily maintained by
one of the addressing members. The question of acquiring the Open Space, which
is held in trust by the county, by VOMCA was raised and a request for VOMCA to
assume the area was posed to the other assembled members.
A motion was made to investigate the
possibility and assume the area. The motion carried. The motion was based on
permission by the county to do so without assumption of all other open space in
Olde Mill. To assume these areas, VOMCA would assume liability and upkeep of
the land if residents did not take on the responsibility. The county will
render a decision on this issue. Open
Space cannot be sold.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
―Respectfully submitted by Sarah Hakulin, Membership
Officer & Treasurer

VOMCA has made it possible to secure
grants from the State and County for projects like the repair of sidewalks,
repavingour the pool road, installing speed humps, and other community improvements.
If we did not have an association and volunteers, we could not secure many of
these benefits or services.
- We sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt, Santa
Visit, Community Carnival, and Community Yard Sale. With more members and
volunteers, we could do even more.
- We’ve been keeping up with what’s
happening concerning the new development on the Wade property at Old Mill
and Oakwood Roads. Learn more, come to a meeting.
- We work with local government
concerning issues that affect our community.
- Elections are held in October for
members of the Board of Directors. In order to vote, or to run, membership
dues must be mailed and postmarked by September 1.
