VOMCA Meeting
Wed., June 3, 7 p.m., Olde Mill Pool

Village of Olde Mill Crier

Volume 39,  Number  6  / June 2009

President’s Message
The Olde Mill Carnival will be held from June 10-13 at 6:00-11:00 p.m. each night. This is a way for everyone to have fun and support the community of Olde Mill.
VOMCA and the Pool Committee have been talking about trying to boost our membership for the Swim Club this season. For the month of May we have decided to offer a discount for new members who purchase a certificate through the Olde Mill Swim Club. If the new member purchases a certificate for $400 then the $300 annual fee would be waived for the first year. Since these are hard economic times for some we hope this will bring in some new memberships for the 2009 season. This is also being advertised in the Maryland Gazette and the Evening Capital. VOMCA will pay for the advertising out of the VOMCA budget.
Both items above were discussed with the OMSC Committee and voted in favor by the VOMCA Board. We really need to boost our membership to pay for the operating costs at the pool. For more information, please contact me at 410-729-8558. Membership has been a problem for some swim clubs and one local club as of this date may not even open this summer.
I would like to thank all of you who volunteered time at the pool this spring in getting it ready for the season.
As of this date there has been no new word on the Snyder Homes project. We will keep you posted.

Fundraiser Auction for Playground Improvements
On Saturday, July 11, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Friends of Olde Mill (FOOM) will be participating in a Quarter Auction at the Masonic Lodge on Crain Hwy. in Glen Burnie. Please reserve this date to come out and support this fun night for improving our children’s play areas. Call 410-987-1239 for more info, or see the attached flyer.

FOOM Fills Sandbox
Just in time for summer, Friends of Olde Mill has filled the sandbox at Barlowe Field and donated some toys for your children’s use. They are also in the process of repairing and refurbishing one of the swing sets by replacing chains and seats for our older youngsters. Your money from the carnivals and donations at Easter, plus your support throughout the years, has made it possible for many improvements to the play area for our community.

The basketball court repaving, purchase of new basketball hoops, and a bench have all been the result of your support to the Friends of Olde Mill. Our hope is that someday, we will have enough money to purchase additional play equipment, sand, and mulch. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit and any money donated to FOOM is tax-deductible. Our website is www.foominc.org or call president Mike Hakulin, Jr,, at 410-987-1239. Consult the attached flyer for fundraiser information July 6. See you there.

VOMCA has made it possible to secure grants from the State and County for projects like the repair of sidewalks, repavingour the pool road, installing speed humps, and other community improvements. If we did not have an association and volunteers, we could not secure many of these benefits or services.

  • We sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt, Santa Visit, Community Carnival, and Community Yard Sale. With more members and volunteers, we could do even more.
  • We’ve been keeping up with what’s happening concerning the new development on the Wade property at Old Mill and Oakwood Roads. Learn more, come to a meeting.
  • We work with local government concerning issues that affect our community.
  • Elections are held in October for members of the Board of Directors. In order to vote, or to run, membership dues must be mailed and postmarked by September 1.

Occasional one-time projects at the pool and Barlowe Field come up. If you can volunteer please email www.board@vomca.com or call 410-987-0316.
The next VOMCA meeting will be at the Old Mill Swim Club on Wednesday, June 3 at 7 p.m.
