President’s Message
I remind everyone that the annual Olde Mill
Carnival will be back in town from June 10-13. Specific times for when it will
be operating will be announced. Please remember that this is a big fundraiser
for the Olde Mill community. We hope that families will join us for some fun.
The rides and food will be provided by Shaw & Sons.
There will be a VOMCA meeting on May 6 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be located at the Old Mill High
School.
Please remember that meetings from June through September will be held at the Swim
Club pool at 7:00
p.m. the first Wednesday each
month.
I thank all of the volunteers—especially Charlene
Stammer and Sarah Hakulin—for their hard work in having another successful
Easter egg hunt this year. The weather was great and we had many children in
attendance.
I would like to give a big thanks to Rick Behringer
for spending many long hours at the pool getting it ready for the 2009 season.
Remember to get in your 2009 dues and join family fun at the pool. We are
looking for new memberships for the 2009 season. Tell your friends and
coworkers about us. I think we are the cheapest deal in the county for fun in
the sun.
Community Pools will again be the pool
management company that will be operating our pool for us. I would like to
remind everyone to read the rules and regulations pertaining to the pool. The
rules are posted there and I hope everyone will take a few minutes to explain
them to their children. Please remember that there is a payment required for
all guests. If you own your bond and have paid your dues those living in the
household are able to enjoy the pool; however friends and family that are
visiting must pay the guest fee. This was concern last year of some members and
I stated that it would be addressed this year. I will make the guard staff
aware of this rule. If anyone has a problem or concern that can’t be taken care
of by the pool staff, please feel free to contact me at tastag@verizon.net. No one should be contacting Community Pools and
I have instructed Duane Robins to have all calls directed to us. Your
assistance is appreciated in this matter. Have a safe summer at the pool! —Tom Stag, President
County Executive Leopold
Urges Caution as
Local Cases of Suspected Swine Flu are Reported
Annapolis (April 29, 2009)--County
Executive John R. Leopold today urged caution and patience from parents as the
Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reported three “probable”
cases of Swine Flu in Anne Arundel County.
One of the cases is a student at Folger McKinsey Elementary
School in Severna Park. The other two cases are members of the student’s family.
The child has been recovering from flu-like symptoms since Friday and has been
out of school. The cases have not been confirmed as Swine Flu by the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control. The school will be open tomorrow as scheduled.
“This is a serious concern that is still
being investigated,” County Executive Leopold said. “We will remain in contact
with state and federal health officials to keep our citizens informed. Every precaution
is being taken, and we urge parents to remain calm. These cases are not
confirmed, and all three people are recovering.”
“Some of the symptoms to be aware of are a
fever of over 100 degrees coupled with a sore throat or cough,” said Dr.
Jinlene Chan, Acting Deputy Health Officer. “We recommend that parents of
children who develop these symptoms consult with their usual doctor and recover
at home instead of going to emergency rooms if possible. We will continue to
update our citizens as more information becomes available.”
The Anne Arundel County Health Department
has set up an information hotline at 410-222-7343.
Easter Egg Event Was a Winner Again
Thanks to all the children and parents who
came to our annual Easter Egg Event on April 4. Windy but sunny weather made
the event a success. Thanks to the Girl Scouts for their help in planting the
eggs and to our Easter Bunny who always does an outstanding job. Thanks to
Charlene Stammer, Chairperson, and all the volunteers who stuffed the eggs and
helped make the day a success. Pictures will be posted on the VOMCA website at www.vomca.org.

State Again Plans Mosquito Control, Asks Your
Cooperation
Olde Mill participated in the mosquito
control program last year and hopefully reduced the incidence of bites to less
than previous years. We have been invited to participate again this year by the
Maryland Department of Agriculture, Mosquito Control Section.
The day of the week that spraying will occur
will be announced when the schedule is completed at the Dept. of Agriculture.
Residents who wish to have their property excluded from spraying will need to
submit an exemption form. You can request this form and more information by
going to the website: www.mda.state.md.us/plants-pests/mosquito_control/mosquito_control_policy.php
Homeowners are asked to be proactive in
their efforts to eradicate backyard breeding sites by eliminating standing
water. Tips on how to do this are also found on the above website. For any
other information, you may call 410-987-1239.

Arundel County
can bring up to four file boxes of personal documents and watch them be
shredded. Old paper tax records, medical records (no X-ray films), and financial
documents are ideal. Please remove documents from metal binders and remove any
metal clips. Boxes must be taken away by residents.
Vehicles only—no
walkups. First come, first served. Event is held rain or shine. No charge, but
donations are greatly appreciated.
Lock Your Cars
Make sure your vehicles are locked at all
times when parked. Don’t make it easy for thieves. There have been some recent
reports of cars being broken into in Olde Mill, Williamstowne, and Gartlemill.
Please call 911 immediately to report any sign of theft or illegal activity.
Membership Benefit
There are 1300 families in this area and we
now have 106 VOMCA members. The recent repair of Olde Mill’s sidewalks is one
example of what your association can do for you. Without an active association,
we could not apply for this State transportation grant. Sidewalk repair is the
responsibility of the homeowner.
