President’s Message
Sidewalk repairs
have started. This program is the result of a grant that VOMCA received from
the State of Maryland. I thank
Sarah Hakulin and Rick Behringer for once again taking on this project.
This effort is a very
time-consuming process to get the grant request in and meet with the
contractor. I would like to let everyone know that individuals representing
VOMCA and the contractor looked throughout the community and determined what
sidewalks most needed repairs. The priority was placed on fixing tripping
hazards that could cause injury.
Those who read the Crier knew and sent in emails to ask us
to look at their sidewalks, and this was done. I am getting emails now from
individuals requesting their sidewalks also be repaired, but this grant has
already been allocated. If anyone would like VOMCA to look at their walkways in
the future, please send an email to board@vomca.org.
This process is done a couple months in advance before the sidewalk repairs begin.
Please keep an eye on the Village Crier
for word of the next grant.
Welcome to Barbara
Radolec on board with the Olde Mill Swim Club. Barbara will be taking over the
Treasurer position at the swim club for the 2009 season. I have heard a lot of
positive feedback in the community about Barbara’s past work in the community
and at the pool. I thank Dana Lawler for her time as Treasurer with the Olde
Mill Swim Club. The Treasurer position at the pool is a demanding job which requires
more time than any other position in VOMCA or the OMSC.
Remember that the
Olde Mill Swim Club 2009 membership renewals have been sent out. Don’t forget
to get yours mailed in. The cost has increased only $10.00 for the coming season.
There has been no
news regarding the proposed development of the Wade property. We are waiting
for the plans to be officially sent to the County for their feedback and
approval. I have been in contact with Ed Middlebrooks, our county councilman,
and hope to meet with him and discuss the issues that the community has sent to
me.
Please remember that there will be a VOMCA general
meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday,
April 1, at Old Mill
Senior High School. Your attendance
is needed and appreciated.

Easter Egg Event Coming April 4
The annual Easter
Egg Event will be held on Saturday, April 4, at 1:00
p.m. at Barlowe Field. Rain date is April 5. There will be games,
prizes, an Easter egg hunt, and a visit from the Easter Bunny. Pre-register
your child by calling 410-987-1239, to allow us to plan better.
Shred-A-Rama III Set for May 16
Sponsored by the
Anne Arundel County Police Community Relations Council, the event known as
Shred-A-Rama returns for the third year on Saturday, May 16. A special truck
with heavy-duty shredding equipment will be in Millersville from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. that day.
The truck will be
located in the back lot of the County Police Headquarters building at 8495
Veterans Highway in Millersville. Any resident of Anne
Arundel County
can bring up to four file boxes of personal documents and watch them be
shredded. Old paper tax records, medical records (no X-ray films), and financial
documents are ideal. Please remove documents from metal binders and remove any
metal clips. Boxes must be taken away by residents.
Vehicles only—no
walkups. First come, first served. Event is held rain or shine. No charge, but
donations are greatly appreciated.
Lock Your Cars
There have been
some recent reports of cars being broken into in the Williamstowne and
Gartlemill areas of Olde Mill. Residents should call 911 immediately to report
such activity so that the police have information to apprehend those who
violate our privacy and property. Reports allow the police to create a profile of
their mode of operation and facilitate their capture.
Old Mill High School Needs Volunteers
The Citizen
Advisory Committee to the Board of Education needs volunteers to represent Old
Mill. If you would be interested in serving on Old
Mill High School’s
Citizen Advisory Council, please call Principal Sheila Hill at 410-969-9010 (x212).
The Benefits of Membership
There are 1,300
families in this community and we have just now reached 100 families as members
of VOMCA. The recent repair of Olde Mill sidewalks is one example of what your
association can do for you. Without an active association, we could not apply
for the State Transportation Grant that funds this. Living in the noise
abatement zone near the airport, we are fortunate that we can occasionally qualify
for this money.
Sidewalk repair is
the responsibility of the homeowner. There is no “homeowner matching county
funds program” anymore. Homeowner associations that have mandatory fees may
provide funds for repair, but with our totally volunteer association, Olde Mill
cannot underwrite these repairs. For this reason, we need residents to support
the Village of Olde
Mill Community Association, so that we can
continue to qualify for grants and pay the application fees, as well as be
solvent enough to pay taxes on Barlowe Field and cover other community expenses.
Visit www.vomca.org for membership forms or to
pay your dues via Paypal.
Swim Club Still Has Memberships Available
Our Olde Mill Swim Club
needs your support to continue operating for your enjoyment. Spend your leisure
hours this summer at the pool and have a vacation every day. Remember to join
today. Members should have received their packets in the mail by now. Information
for new members on joining the pool can be picked up at the pool or go to www.vomca.org and click on “Swim Club.” You
can also call 410-987-7890 for information.
