VOMCA Meeting
Wed., March 4, 7 p.m., Old Mill High
Very Important Votes on 2009 Budgets
      for Swim Club and VOMCA
Village of Olde Mill Crier

Volume 39,  Number  3  /  March 2009

President’s Message
I have sent emails out to all the general membership regarding the VOMCA/OMSC 2009 budget. If you did not receive an email from me, please contact me (tastag@verizon.net) so that I may send you an email for you to review the proposed budgets before our March 4 vote. As of this date I have received 25 email votes for the budget.
The area community leaders met with Dan Boyd on February 18 pertaining to the Snyder Home project to be located on Wade Farms property. There really has been no change in the proposal from our earlier meetings; basically the plans that are our web site have not changed. These plans, from what I understand, will be the ones sent to the county.
Snyder Homes will be required to hold public meetings for the community members to attend and also a public meeting before Anne Arundel County. This process is about two years away from the information that was conveyed to me at the meeting I attended. The community associations each had one representative. The meeting was attended by Southgate, Fox Chase, and Olde Mill.

As everyone knows, we are in tough economic times. I would like to let everyone know that we submitted a request for a ten dollar increase for yearly dues for members at the pool. We have kept the early payment discount for those who pay $300 before March 15 for active membership, then between March 15 – April 15 it rises to $310. All memberships postmarked after April 15 will be $335. Please refer to the Olde Mill Swim Club website at www.oldemill.org for more detailed information.
The pool hours are the same, however we had to make some cuts in the budget in order to keep the membership fee at the selected rate. The biggest adjustment to the budget was the pool contract. Community Pools offered the lowest bid and were the ones that worked with us to adjust hours and give us the best savings. The guard hours have been cut from 277 hours a week to 230 a week. The pool manager will have the authority to contact Community Pools in the event that we would require additional guards. Again, the cut in guards’ hours do not affect the pool’s hours of operation.
I also want to note that this in no way will affect the safety of our pool. We shall always meet mandatory requirements of staffing per the State and County Codes; that is also a requirement from the pool management company.  I would also like to remind the members that as parents we must always keep an eye on our young children at the pool.  We as parents know our child’s swimming skills and limitations. I have a child myself and it is my responsibility to keep tabs on her. The guards have a job to keep everyone safe and its our responsibility as parents of young children to do the same.
VOMCA President Tom Stag

Easter Egg Event Returns on April 4
The annual Easter Egg Event will be held on Saturday, April 4, at 1:00 p.m. at Barlowe Field. Rain date is April 5. Donations of candy and prizes for Easter eggs can be made at 8240 Ahearn Rd. Call 410-987-1239.

Old Mill High School Needs Volunteers
The Citizen Advisory Committee to the Board of Education needs volunteers to represent Old Mill High. If you would be interested in serving on Old Mill High School’s Citizen Advisory Council, please call Principal Sheila Hill at 410-969-9010 (x212).

Where We Stand With Membership
At this writing, 96 families in the Village of Olde Mill have joined the community association. There are 1,300 families in this development. Support your community by joining today for only $15 so that your voice is heard regarding the proposed subdivision on the northeastern edge of Olde Mill. With a larger membership, we might be able to assist FOOM (Friends of Olde Mill) with equipment for our playground. Visit www.vomca.org for membership forms or to pay on PayPal.
Our swim club also needs your support to continue operating for your enjoyment. Spend your leisure hours this summer at the pool and have a vacation every day. Look for membership information coming in March. Go to www.vomca.org and click on Swim Club.

Flea Market Date Set by FOOM
FOOM (Friends of Olde Mill), a nonprofit fundraising organization, has set September 12 for Community Flea Market Day, with the 19th as a rain date. Mark it on your calendar and look for more information in the coming months. Pick-up dates for donations will be announced by way of a sign at  Barlowe Field and in the Maryland Gazette. Information can be found on FOOM’s website, www.foominc.org.

Another Grant Awarded for Sidewalks
VOMCA has been awarded a State Transportation Grant for repair of more of Olde Mill’s sidewalks, to begin sometime this spring. Sidewalks slated for repair have been identified and notices will be posted by the contractor.

Water Supply Pipe Service Plan
Olde Mill homeowners may have received a direct-mail letter from a comapny called Home Service. For about $60 annually they offer to provide repair coverage if the water line on your property ruptures. The company lists a Lancaster, PA, mailing address but appears to be based in Florida. The Better Business Bureau for our area shows two complaints for Home Service in the past two years. If anyone is considering them, know that they are in no way endorsed by VOMCA; they seem to have chosen our commiunty at random for a promotional mailing. You should probably research them further, and seek references from anyone who has used their services.
