   Important Votes on 2009 Budgets

Village of Olde Mill Crier

Volume 39,  Number  1  /  January 2009

President’s Message
I hope that everyone had a greatand safeholiday season. I would like to thank all the members who assisted this year with Santa visiting Olde Mill area. I also would like to extend appreciation to the board members who took the time to judge the houses for the Christmas Lighting Contest. See the results in the article below.
VOMCA held its elections for officers and board members for 2009 at the December meeting. It was nice to see a decent turnout during a busy month, so that we could take care of this important election.
I hope that all received the email I forwarded to the membership. This included a PDF of County Executive John Leopold’s “Month in Review” for January 2009. The county newsletter noted that VOMCA, along with other voluntary community associations, struggles to maintain and increase membership. It also emphasized the importance of such associations, even though membership is not mandatory. I would like to thank Mr. Leopold and his staff for thinking of us as a prime example. It is amazingand disappointingto think that we have over 1,300 homes in the community and fewer than 300 members.
I have received some complaints about vehicles parked on the roads in the community. However, if it is a county road, the vehicles are tagged properly, and the road is not designated as “No Parking,” then these vehicles are allowed to be parked there.
Also a reminder that VOMCA has not taken over any “open area” parcels in Olde Mill. VOMCA only is responsible for the 8-plus acres at Barlowe Field and the Olde Mill Swim Club.
If there are any other concerns in the Olde Mill area, please contact a VOMCA board member or email us at Board@VOMCA.org.
I would like to thank all the volunteers from both VOMCA and the Olde Mill Swim Club for making 2008 a great year for the community. Remember, if you can’t volunteer, you could do the next best thing and join VOMCA for 2009. The stronger our group is in numbers, the more we may have support for the majority opinion on things that affect Olde Mill.
Again, thank you everyone for your support in 2008, and we hope to work together with you for the betterment of Olde Mill in 2009.
   —President Tom Stag

Minutes of December 3, 2008, VOMCA Meeting
We had 16 members present with 11 needed for a quorum to conduct the business of Olde Mill. Meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m.
A new 3-year contract for the management of the pool was approved. Community Pools gave us the best figures for the pool contract for the next 3 years. The first two years will be $46,500 each in 2009 and 2010. The year 2011 will cost $48,830. Parents are reminded that they must assume responsibility for children playing in the pool. 12 votes carried passage of the contract.
The Treasurer reported $1,522.14 in the checking account and $4,058.76 in the savings account for VOMCA. There were no figures available for the Swim Club.
The budgets for VOMCA and the Swim Club are being worked on, so a vote can be taken at the Jan. 7, 2009, meeting.
Membership reported 45 new members for 2009. Please send in your membership applications as soon as possible. Go to www.VOMCA.org for an application and to sign up for electronic delivery of the Crier. Dues are $15 annually per household
Elections were also held at the December 3 meeting. Treasurer for 2009 is Sarah Hakulin. Al Miller was elected to a 3-year Board term beginning in 2009. Other results were as follows: Tom Stag, President; Rick Behringer, Vice President; Charlene Connery, Secretary; Membership Chairperson, vacant. For the Board positions (term in parentheses expires at end of that year): Tom Malloy (2009); Sandy Sacra (2010); Colleen Flack, Dana Lawler, Al Miller (all 2011).
A big thank-you to Boy Scout Troop 975 for delivering the December Crier to the Village of Olde Mill. This was a special delivery of a print edition so that the membership information reached everyone. We thank the Troop 975 Scouts for a great job and good deed of service to the community.
Santa visit was scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 20, and the Lighting Contest judging was scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 21, between 6 and 9 p.m. Signs are to be posted for both events.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
—Respectfully submitted by Sarah Hakulin for Charlene Connery, Secretary

Santa Rides Through Again
On Saturday, Dec. 20, the Glen Burnie Volunteer Fire Department brought Santa to the Village of Olde Mill. Many children turned out for this yearly event and even a party was planned around the street schedule for Santa’s appearance. Santa with his candy canes brought hugs and smiles and fun to young and old alike.
A donation of food for the North County Emergency Outreach Network (NCEON) was requested. Even with the short notice of the date of Santa’s arrival, people were very generous and we filled the back of the Fire Dept. rescue van. The community association made an additional donation of $130 to support this annual event.
We would like to thank Glen Burnie Volunteer Fire Department, Santa’s close friend and former Olde Mill resident Tom Dixon, John Tilden, and Sarah Hakulin for helping with this fun visit for the children of our community. Thanks also to the residents of Olde Mill for their generous food donations for those in need this holiday season.
Besides the photos below, more pictures of Santa’s visit can be seen on the webpage at www.vomca.org.

Olde Mill Gets A Shout-Out in County Exec’s Newsletter
VOMCA got a plug for increased membership in the monthly review newsletter issued by County Executive John Leopold’s office. The full publication can be found at www.aacounty.org. The excerpt about Olde Mill reads:

 Join Voluntary Community Associations: Unlike
homeowners associations, many community or improvement
associations have voluntary membership. For example, of the
1,300 homes in greater Olde Mill, only about 300 are members of
the Village of Olde Mill Community Association (VOMCA), even
though yearly membership fee is very low.
   Joining Four Seasons, or
Arden Community Associations, or the
Greater Odenton Improvement Association helps all of you
because it shows that you are one as a community. It is hard to
volunteer time because of other responsibilities, but joining can
help too.  —Brenda Reiber, Community and Constituent Services
