President’s Message
There will be no
pool meeting on Monday because of the Labor Day holiday. We will have a VOMCA general
meeting on September 3 at 7:00. This
meeting will be at the Olde Mill Swim Club.
I would like to
thank all the volunteers who assisted at the OMSC this year. Without the
volunteers this pool would not run to provide the fun for all of the families.
I think that everyone has enjoyed the season. I would like to thank Peter our
pool manager and his staff for performing well to ensure the pool was open
every day. The Pool Committee will be sitting down and going over proposals for
next year’s pool contract. We also will be working on the 2009 swim season
budget. If you would like to comment or submit ideas, please attend a pool or
VOMCA meeting. We will keep you posted on the 2009 swim season dues and budget
as they become available.
We are in the
process of having signs installed at Barlowe Field and the OMSC. The signs will
read “No trespassing from dusk till dawn.” This will allow the police to effectively
move loiterers on their way after dark. I would like to thank Rick for his work
in getting this accomplished.
The Swim Club will
be open one extra weekend this year. The pool will be open on September 6 and 7
from12:00 noon till 6:00 p.m.
There has been no
new communications regarding the Snyder Homes property. The beginning phase is
still with the county.
I want to remind
all members that the general VOMCA meeting will be in October. If anyone would
like to assist in the budget process this year please let me know. Also, if you
are interested in running for a position on VOMCA or the OMSC Director, please
let us know.
—Tom Stag, VOMCA President
Aug. 6, 2008, VOMCA Meeting Minutes
Meeting began at 7:10 p.m.
Membership
OBI delivered VOMCA membership forms in July. 18 new members joined. The
new members covered the cost of the mailings. There are currently 148 members.
Vice
President’s Report
VOMCA Savings: $4,055.34; VOMCA Checking: $5,120.95
The county tax bill will be paid out of accounts.
Tom Stag is in contact with alternate carnival vendors for future
carnivals.
President/Pool
Don Owens is traveling on business and had to step down as the Pool Representative.
A new representative is needed.
The pool has approximately $21,000 in savings and $23,000 in checking.
The Country Club Estates community pool [in Glen Burnie]
had to close for the 2008 season due to a fire. OMSC has opened our pool to
Country Club members at no charge. They are very appreciative. OMSC has no
additional liability. The OMSC Pool Insurance covers the additional members.
There is a separate log for the Country Club members to use when they sign in.
Each member receives a copy of OMSC Rules on their first visit.
Three of our OMSC guards are either missing hours (income) or their
hourly salary is incorrect. Tom Stag has left phone messages and has sent the
pool management company a letter to try and resolve. Community Pools is not
disputing the lifeguards’ hours but they have not discussed how to resolve the
problem.
OMSC/VOMCA still owes Community Pools for the August payment of $4,975.
Tom Stag feels that holding August payment is holding Community Pools to their
contract to pay the lifeguards. Rick Behringer feels that the paychecks will be
resolved but holding the August payment would give VOMCA leverage. We took at
vote and the results were 6 to 5 in favor of holding up the August payment.
Tom and Rick have met with other pool management companies to get quotes
for the 2009 season:
American Pools – Has seen the pool
before; they have quoted $49,500
Continental Pools – Would like to wait to
come out later to see the pool and make a bid.
Community Pools [our current mgmt.
company] – Has option to bid.
Century Pools – Met with Tom & Rick
on 8/4/08; Tom is waiting on
bid.
OMSC is considering reducing the number of guards from 5 to 4. Pool
membership is down, which justifies reducing the guards. There are approx. 277
members per week at the pool.
Snyder Homes
Update
The builder had until July 2008 to respond to VOMCA questions, which
they have responded. Now the county has until Aug 16 to review the responses.
New Business
Graffiti on pump station building at the corner of Old Mill Blvd. & Old
Mill Rd. has been painted over again by VOMCA
members. The county will not repaint. VOMCA has asked the county to install a
fence around the pump station to deter vandals from painting graffiti on the
building. Tom Stag has left the County a voice mail to follow up on the fence
but has not received a response yet.
Mike Hardman, a community Eagle Scout, has completed the new Barlowe
Field sign and planter and it looks great!
A suggestion for a new Boy Scout project would be to install no-trespassing
signs from or for the Boy Scouts to sand, repaint, and install the old
basketball back boards to finish the basketball courts.
4x4 lumber will be placed in the OMSC parking lot near the tree to stop
people from parking on the grass and on the sidewalk.
Please contact Sandy Sacra about 2009 Entertainment Books, sold by the
Boy Scouts. The books cost $25.00 each. The first 20 people to purchase their
2009 book will receive a 2008 book that can be used until Nov. 1, 2008.
FOOM
Michelle and Eric are new FOOM members who are in charge of the Fall
Flea Market – September 13 at the Pool parking lot. So far, 17 of the 44 spots
have already been reserved. Each spot costs $10.00. There will be crafters and
vendors such as Pampered Chef, Avon, etc.
Meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
—Respectfully submitted by Charlene
Stammer-Connery, Secretary

Basketball Equipment Vandalized at Barlowe
The Friends of Olde
Mill were very saddened by the apparent vandalism to the portable basketball hoop
that was recently installed at the Barlowe Field athletic courts for the
enjoyment of all. We were grateful for the donation of this equipment because
it was something we did not have to buy. Evidently someone was less
enthusiastic about this improvement to the courts, and felt compelled to take
something away from the youth of Olde Mill.
Playground
equipment is extremely expensive and funds are just not available to provide new
or replace damaged equipment. Unfortunately, these senseless acts hurt everyone
and diminish the efforts of all who give of their time, resources, and energy.
If anyone sees these
acts of senseless destruction, please call the police at 911. Tell your kids to
keep their eyes and ears open too. Vandalism is stealing something from them
also, including a sense of ownership in a nice, hard-working community. We all
need to protect each other.
Remember, too,
activities and congregating on the Barlowe Field area between dusk to dawn is
considered trespassing, and should be reported.

Sand Donated to Replenish Barlowe Play Areas
FOOM received a
donation of a number of bags of sand for the sandbox this past week. More sand is needed for the sandbox and further
donations would be greatly appreciated. The sand costs $3.55 per 50-lb. bag at
Lowe’s. Anyone wishing to donate anything to the playground fund through
Friends of Olde Mill can write it off their income tax. FOOM is a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization. Anyone wishing to donate time to putting up swings or
painting the swing set on the old playground please email us at FOOMINC@FOOMInc.org.

Raise the Flag
on Sept. 11
On Thursday, September 11, an American flag should be displayed outside every
home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display
an American flag on this seventh anniversary of one our country's worst
tragedies. We do this in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their
families, friends, and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those
who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.
In the days, weeks and months
following 9/11, our country was bathed in American
flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood
shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flag displays have largely
disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't
take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the
fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.
Fly the American flag on Sept. 11 to show
your remembrance, honor, and support for all those who have sacrificed.
