President's Message

There will be a VOMCA meeting on July 2, 2008.  The meeting will be at the Olde Mill Swim Club and starts at 7:00 p.m.  There will be a board meeting following the general meeting. Due to lack of quorum, there was neither a general meeting nor a board meeting for June—and thus no minutes are in this Crier.
I would like to thank everyone who volunteered time for the carnival.  VOMCA made $2,701.75 this year.  I hope that FOOM and the Swim Club did well also.
FOOM has received a matching grant from Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation, in the amount of $1,000.00.  I would like to thank Mike Hakulin, Jr., and all the volunteers from FOOM for making this possible.  The money will be used for purchasing new basketball nets and backboards.  I would also like to thank FOOM for their work in assisting in getting the contract taken care of for the resurfacing of the basketball courts.  Without FOOM this could not have been possible.  VOMCA has give $3,200 to FOOM for assistance with the resurfacing.
I hope everyone is enjoying the pool this year.  With the early hot weather it was nice to jump in and cool off.  If anyone knows of families looking to join the Olde Mill Swim Club please have them contact the swim club direct for information.
I would like to thank Rick Behringer for taking care of getting the pool pump repaired in a timely manner.  The pump was pulled out last week and repaired by Community Pools.  The pump was placed back in service that evening so we did not have to close the pool the next day.  I would like to remind everyone that all the lifeguards shall be treated with respect.  If any members have a problem, please see Peter who is our Pool Manager this year.  Please do not contact Community Pools; only certain individuals with the swim club are authorized to contact Community Pools.
I would like to thank Al Miller for taking care of the large Bradford pear tree that fell at Barlowe Field.  Al saved VOMCA from having to spend money for a contractor to come in to cut up and remove the heavy, broken branches.
Hope to see many of you at the July 2 meeting.
—Tom Stag, VOMCA President

Wanted: Portable Basketball Hoops

Donate your unused, unwanted portable basketball hoops to the Friends of Olde Mill (FOOM), a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the renovation of the playground areas, including the newly resurfaced basketball courts, here in Olde Mill. Your donation  will contribute to the youith of Olde Mill by providing places and equipment for after-school and summer vacation activities, and you can receive a write-off for your income taxes. Call Mike Hakulin, Jr., at 410-987-1239.

Mosquito Control

The Maryland Dept. of Agriculture is providing mosquito control through  spraying in Olde Mill, most recently on June 12. The area is tested every  week for density of infestation. The criteria is based on a trap that catches mosquitoes; three of the insects caught within two minutes will initiate a spray treatment. Every 30 days the settlement ponds are also treated, most recently on June 13.

With the abundance of springs and groundwater here in Olde Mill, the area is a good breeding ground for mosquitoes. It is hoped that this spray program will allow us to use our patios and backyards with fewer of these nuisance pests around. Remember to empty any standing water from recycling bins, containers, outdoor furniture covers, etc. to reduce the habitat for breeding.

Elvaton/Wade Subdivision

The subdivision proposal presented to the county department of Planning & Zoning in February 2008 has been returned to the developer [Snyder Homes] to get answers to questions generated by P&Z and by the Olde Mill Community Association. At this writing, the developed has not yet provided answers to any of the questions submitted.
