April VOMCA Meeting
Wednesday, April 2, 7:00 p.m., Old Mill High School, Room A-269
Road Construction on Brightview
Drive
Millersville (April 4, 2008)--Motorists
are advised that road
construction will be ongoing during the week of Monday, April 7, 2008 to
Thursday, April 11, 2008 (weather
permitting). The construction is a
result of road improvements being made by the contractor, Koch Homes in
connection with the development of a new homes community, and the
subsequent relocation of utilities by private utility companies. As a
result, lane closures are expected during the hours of 9:00 AM * 3:00
PM and 8:00 PM - 6:00 AM. Motorists are advised to use extra caution,
reduce speed, and follow posted signs and traffic direction when
traveling on Brightview Drive during the
construction period.
For more information on the project, the public may call the Department
of Inspections and Permits, Infrastructure Division during regular
business hours at 410-222-7542.
President's Message
I would like to thank all the
volunteers for their hard work in having another successful Easter Egg
Event. Shelby Presnell and Charlene
Stammer-Connery, along with the other volunteers, were able to give about 110 children
a good time on a nice sunny Saturday afternoon.
I thank those of you who donated money to FOOM and membership signup for
VOMCA.
As of March 21, we are hoping
that the resurfacing of the parking lot will be starting soon, along with some
long overdue work at Barlowe Field and the Olde Mill Swim Club. They will be removing all the old asphalt and
grading and reconstructing a new parking area.
Please remember when the time comes, we will need all vehicles off the
lot area during the construction.
I have spoken with the county
about requesting grants for the basketball court area. This will probably be the next big item on
the list at the park. Once this is
completed I think we will have a good handle on all the major work that needs
to be done. We must continue to assist
and find creative ways on keeping the Olde Mill Swim Club looking nice. I would like everyone to know that VOMCA has
stepped up to the plate and will be assisting the OMSC in some of the costs
covering the 8+ acres. We will be
releasing funds from VOMCA to be transferred into the OMSC account to cover the
insurance that is not related to the pool.
I will continue to keep
everyone in the community up to date on the Snyder Homes project at Oakwood and
Old Mill Blvd. I have spoken
to the county and Snyder has not submitted any final project plans. I was informed by the county that when Mr.
Snyder gets to the next step he will be required to meet with the affected
communities. I will keep you posted on
any news that I find out. I have made a
request to have a committee of individuals who may be interested in serving on
this project. If you would like to have
a voice or be on this committee, please contact me at tastag@verizon.net.
The Olde Mill Swim Club has
sent out the 2008 membership information.
Please remember to fill out and return to the swim club. Also the Olde Mill Torpedoes Swim Team has
registration forms that were enclosed if your children are interested. Remember that the club also has swim lesson
classes. Please support the Olde Mill
Swim Club. I again would like to thank
Don Owens for accepting the position of director again for the 2008
season. I also would really like to
thank Rick Behringer and the volunteers who assisted on having the main water
line fixed in March. With the help of
Rick and his volunteers who assisted with the labor, the swim club was able to
keep the price at a reasonable rate.
Thanks guys!
With the warmer weather
coming, please try to respect other people’s property. I have had some reports that people are
cutting through private property to reach their final destination. I know it’s easy to take the shortest path to
get to our location but please remember that we may disturb others when we cut
through someone’s yard. I guess we
should think how we feel if we were out, trying to enjoy the privacy of our own
yards, only to have people walking through.
If you could relay this to your children, thank you.
The Olde Mill Carnival will
give the month of June a chance. This is
the biggest source of income for VOMCA and Shaw & Sons are going to give us
the opportunity to make the carnival a success.
If we cannot sell the allotted amount of 500 pre-sale tickets and find
ways of people to join in the carnival we may lose our chance to continue
having the carnival.
—President Tom Stag
Mosquito Spraying Planned for Area
Olde Mill will be
participating in the control of mosquitoes this year. Spraying will be done by
the Maryland Department of Agriculture. County-wide surveillance and control of
larval mosquitoes will be done March to October and for adult mosquitoes, mid
May-September.
This effort is to
facilitate the control of mosquitoes near the sediment ponds and the stream
areas in Olde Mill.
Further information regarding specific days will be published in
the online Crier or on the VOMCA
website. Anyone wishing more information or the chance to opt out of the
spraying area can contact oldemill72@aol.com.
Easter Event
Succeeds Thanks to Help of Many
This thank you is
directed to everyone and anyone who helped with the Easter Egg Event on the
15th of March.
We had a
tremendous turnout, 110 registered children. A big thanks to all the children
and adults who attended the event. The weather was extraordinarily beautiful
and the spirit of giving was evident in the money collected by FOOM for the
playground, and VOMCA to help defray the cost of the event. We even had 4
families join VOMCA.
Our wonderful
Easter Bunny posed with children so parents could get a picture and generally
walked around Barlowe Field greeting all the visitors. Nearly 2,000 eggs were
planted on the field with certain eggs marked for special prizes.
Games for prizes
were played after the hunt was over and a raffle of two Easter flowers and a
restaurant coupon provided excitement for the lucky winners. Children got to
have their hands painted by an artist this year, while others took a chance on
winning coupons to the Rockfish in Annapolis. The moon bounce was here again this
year, giving children a fun time for spring after a long dreary winter. Thanks to everyone
who donated a bag of candy, stuffed an egg, hid an egg, ran a game, set up a
table, used the megaphone to make announcements, brought their child, donated
money, or bought a chance.
Thanks to Shelby Presnell who chaired this event and
worked hard to make it such a successful day. Thanks to all those who helped
her and who volunteered their time. Everyone had a great time and we look
forward to next year.
You can view
pictures of the event by going to the website at www.vomca.org.

VOMCA March 5 Meeting Minutes
Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Brenda Reiber, from Community and Constituent Services, Office of the County Executive, outlined a new Anne Arundel County program
called “Take the 50/50 Challenge.” Its goal is to get all residents to recycle
at least half of their trash. Currently only about 30% is recycled. Details can
be found at www.RecycleMoreOften.com.
A new Community Connections Meeting is coming
up on Saturday 3/8/08 at AA
Community College, which promises some great information.
Dumpters will be available in Olde Mill June
2-4 (just before the carnival) at the Pool parking lot. Need volunteers to monitor
the recycle dumpster.
VOMCA Carnival June 5-8. Pre-sale tickets available for $10.00. Contact
board@vomca.org to order tickets or call Tom Stag at 410-729-8558. Tom
Stag brought up an idea to have a 50/50 raffle at the Carnival and to sell the
tickets at the PTA
There have been reports of fundraiser
spokespersons for the Glen Burnie Volunteer Fire Department going door to door
in Olde Mill. It’s been said that false information is being conveyed to
residents about how the money is used and the solicitors are very aggressive
about their approach.
Membership:
111 families have joined VOMCA as of 3/5/08. We are behind in
membership in relation to previous years. Our goal is at least 156 families. We
would like to encourage membership at the Easter Egg Hunt and the Carnival.
A suggestion was proposed get a Bulk Rate permit
to be used by VOMCA, FOOM and the Pool, but after further discussion, it does
not appear that it would be cost effective.
A second suggestion was made to ask the Boy
Scouts to deliver a mass mailing to the community. Sandy Sacra is on the Board
and will check with the Scouts.
Pool:
Water main repairs will be completed on Saturday 3/8/08. The
goal is to have water on before the Easter Egg Hunt.
The Pool is still looking for someone who
enjoys and would like to run the fundraising efforts for the Pool.
The food booth will be available again at
the VOMCA Carnival. Volunteers are needed. We need to check if the Carnival
offers snow cones; if not we need to check the VOMCA shed to see if we still
have a snow cone machine available. Need VOMCA members to volunteer .
The pool is considering having sponsors post
signs on pool fence to help offset the cost for members to join the Swim Team.

New
Development (at the corner of Oakwood
Road and Old
Mill Blvd.):
Meeting [not open to the public] is set for Friday, March 7, 2008, to
discuss the plans for the new development by Snyder Homes. Any questions should
be directed to Tom Stag. A new zoning/subdivision sign has been posted at the
corner of Oakwood Road and Old
Mill Blvd., specifying that 39 acres is
involved.
A new committee is to be formed to work
together with the County to control the development behind Ahearn
Road. The community would like to keep the current
dirt road from being moved so as to eliminate space for the nursing home and
medical building.
The map of the new development plans will be
posted on the VOMCA website and on the www.OldMillNeighbors.com websites.
Easter
Egg Hunt
Need more volunteers to manage the games.
VOMCA website: Not much usage. We need to
get the word out to go to the site to read the Crier. We talked about putting small ground signs around the
community for the website and for the Carnival.
Rick will ask the contractor who will be
paving the pool parking lot if it’s possible to pave the basketball court also.
We need to be sure that it does not interfere with the grant that we are
receiving for the parking lot. We really need to take care of what we have,
before we invest in new projects. A suggestion was made to paint the fence
around the basketball area. We would need a separate invoice for work that
would be done to the basketball court.
We discussed who should respond to e-mails
that are sent to the Board. If a Board member responds, please copy the other
members of the Board.
MSA Soccer and the Adult Softball League are being charged this year
for use of Barlowe Field.
Parking on the grass area at the Pool
parking lot has become a problem. We need to put up signs on the property so
the carowners can notified they may face towing. ABC Towing is an option,
operating out of the Crown service station.
The Boy Scouts are going to prepare signs
that say “No Trespassing Dusk to Dawn”.
Watson HOA Association will be contacted by
Tom Stag to advise the homeowners that the pool parking lot is private property
and parking is not permitted without prior authorization. If the problem
continues, the next step will be to post signs.

Softball League Gearing Up
The Olde Mill Adult Slow
Pitch Softball League is once again inviting all adults living in Olde Mill to
join in on the Sunday softball fun league. The league started in 1976, so we
are entering our 33rd year of fun and games. We play at Barlowe Field, next to
the pool off of Chalet
Drive in
Olde
Mill (located behind the 7-11 on Old Mill Rd.). This is a community recreation league which is
competitive, but not at the tournament caliber. We play on
Sundays—except holidays—but we do play on Father’s
Day. The season starts in mid-April, and ends with a double-elimination tournament
in August. Doubleheaders for each team are played throughout the day starting
around 9 a.m. and ending around 6 p.m.
We strongly encourage
players, families, friends, and relatives to join us throughout the day. There
is a playground next to field for our young guests.
If you are an individual and
wish to join a team, but do not have any contacts, then you should call Ed
Dahling at 410-925-4194 and he will put you in
touch with a team that is looking for additional players.
If you are a coach who has a
team or you have several players and are looking for some additions to your
roster, call Ed Dahling at 410-925-4194. The
league fee will be between $500 and $550 per team,
which includes the umpire fee, 1 new softball per game, 20 games, plus the end
of year double-elimination tournament. We would like to have 10 or 12 teams in
the league this year.
Our league is not affiliated
with the county or any other sanctioning organization. We use the NSA rules with USSSA bat list. We have a few exceptions
to NSA rules, such as: We allow four home runs
per game; unlimited lineup (everyone gets to play and bat) with a minimum of 8
to field a team; we allow courtesy runners; and there is no automatic out for
less than 10 batters.
